Same again will do as Aberdeen begin cup defenceAberdeen manager Derek McInnes wants more of the same from his players in tomorrow’s League Cup third round match against Livingston. The Dons were in fine form as they swept aside Ross County with a comfortable 3-0 win on Saturday. And manager McInnes is confident his side can progress to the next stage of the League Cup with a similar display at Pittodrie tomorrow evening. He said: “Hopefully we can get ourselves into the next round of the League Cup. “If we play like we did against Ross County then we will give ourselves every opportunity. “It was a very good performance. “We just take each game as it comes but we know the importance of the four games in a row at home. “We have had some tough games to open the season and now we have the opportunity to get some points on the board and get through to the next round of the cup.” www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/sport/football/aberdeen-fc/352237/same-again-will-do-as-dons-begin-cup-defence/?

Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn will miss Livingston's League Cup third-round visit after picking up a knock in Saturday's league win over Ross County. Defenders Clark Robertson and skipper Russell Anderson will miss out again for the holders because of injury. Livingston, who lost at home to Raith Rovers in the Championship, have problems in defence through injury. Declan Gallagher, Simon Mensing and Bradley Donaldson miss out again along with goalkeeper Kevin Walker. Livingston have only won one of their last six games. It is the first meeting between the sides since the visitors exited the top flight eight years ago and they have not won at Pittodrie since 2004. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29216737

Aberdeen v Livingston previewThe Northern Ireland international winger picked up a knock in Saturday's 3-0 home Premiership win over Ross County. The Dons will also be without defender Clark Robertson (thigh) and skipper Russell Anderson (knee). Livingston, who are fifth in the Championship table with seven points from six matches, beat Queen of the South 1-0 after extra-time in the second round. However, they will have to bounce back from a 1-0 home defeat to Raith Rovers on Saturday if they are to shock the cup holders. Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes believes the memory of winning the League Cup last season will act as motivation for his players this campaign. He said: "We saw how important it was to bring that silverware back. We saw the benefits it brought to the city. "It whets the appetite for everybody, the supporters and players alike. We want to experience days like that more often and the cups do bring that opportunity for every club, Livingston included, and I am sure every one of the Premiership clubs at the start of the campaign will feel that it could be them. "Livingston won't be fazed. For us to get into the next round, we are going to have to deal with that challenge, but obviously the motivation for us, after last season, is there. www.football365.com/match/3771933/preview?

Aberdeen 4-0 Livingston: Rooney the hat-trick heroADAM Rooney fired a second half hat-trick to finally confirm Aberdeen’s place in the League Cup quarter finals as the holders’ class eventually told against the Championship side. Scorers: Aberdeen - Taylor 8, Rooney 61, 74, 87 The Irishman took his tally to ten for the season with two clinical finishes from distance before completing a second treble of the campaign from close range with four minutes left. The final scoreline was cruel on Livingston, who had contributed to an entertaining tie, but Aberdeen eased through comfortably despite being without captain Russell Anderson and Niall McGinn through injury while Barry Robson, Andrew Considine and Jamie Langfield were on the bench. Scott Brown was given a Dons debut in goal after a summer switch from English League Two club Cheltenham and to be fair he had a few opportunities to impress. Livingston were rocked by an early goal but they stuck to their patient possession football and tested Aberdeen’s new back-up goalkeeper several times, mainly from distance. Keaghan Jacobs, Gary Glen and Jordan White all tried their luck from outside the penalty area in the first half only for Brown to pull off a variety of saves to keep the home side ahead. Aberdeen’s opening goal came in eight minutes and was the result of a set piece straight from the training ground as Willo Flood and Nicky Low combined over a short corner. The former calmly flighted the ball to the back post where Ashton Taylor was left unmarked to guide his header into the net for his first goal for Aberdeen since joining from Tranmere Rovers. www.scotsman.com/sport/football/latest/aberdeen-4-0-livingston-rooney-the-hat-trick-hero-1-3550750

Livi boss sees positives in spite of four-goal defeatJohn McGlynn was complimentary to his Livingston players despite the 4-0 defeat by League Cup holders Aberdeen at Pittodrie last night. The Lions travelled north in hope rather than expectation for the third-round clash with their Premiership opponents and although a strong first-half performance gave the Livi boss reason to consider an upset may have been on the cards, the visitors trailed at the break to Ashton Taylor’s eighth-minute header. McGlynn singled out the hosts’ second goal, Adam Rooney’s first of an impressive hat-trick, as the defining moment of a match in which Livi had threatened to equalise on several occasions. “Until the second goal went in I thought we were well in the game so, I think 4-0 is a bit harsh on us,” McGlynn commented. “I thought we gave a good account of ourselves in the first half where we had one or two opportunities and their goalkeeper has had a couple of good saves. It was quite an open game with chances at either end. “But it became very difficult after they got their second goal when Aberdeen showed their qualities. They’re very sharp and everyone knows they are a good side. The positive we can take is our performance in the first hour, although we got punished later on in the game. But we’ll take it on the chin and dust ourselves down as we’ve got a big game against Hearts on Sunday.” www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/football/livingston/livi-boss-sees-positives-in-spite-of-four-goal-defeat-1-3551131
