Darren Young eyes another Albion Rovers cup shockDARREN YOUNG wants his Albion Rovers heroes to take another scalp – and dump Livingston out the League Cup. The Coatbridge men host the full-time Lions on the back of a thrilling penalty shoot-out derby win over Airdrieonians. Rovers advanced to the second round of the Challenge Cup for the first time since 2009 after player/manager Young netted the winning spot-kick. And the 35-year-old has set his sights on upsetting Livi this Saturday in his first home match in charge at Cliftonhill. The former Scotland under-21s international said: “These are the games you want to be involved in – taking on and testing yourself against full-time teams. “We will have a look at them. They beat Queen of the South 4-3 in their Challenge Cup tie so that was a great result for them. www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/darren-young-eyes-another-albion-3935932?

Livingston boss John McGlynn wary of Albion Rovers threatManager calls on players to perform at their best in tricky League Cup tie at Cliftonhill. Livingston manager John McGlynn says his side will need to be on top form to beat Albion Rovers in their League Cup clash this weekend. The Lions started their campaign with a 4-3 extra-time win over Queen of the South in the Petrofac Training Cup, but the Wee Rovers will enter the game attempting to claim their second cup upset in as many weeks after knocking out rivals Airdrieonians on penalties. McGlynn said: “They showed what they’re capable of with a win against Airdrie and that’s a warning to us. “If they can beat Airdrie then they’re potentially capable of beating a teams like ourselves. “We need to make sure that our attitude is right to ensure that doesn’t happen. “We have to have confidence and belief in ourselves, based on the fact that we went down to Dumfries and won a tough match. “We need to take that into this game because there is no way we can afford to be complacent. www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/livingston-boss-john-mcglynn-wary-3942976?

Gaffer Looks Ahead To The New SeasonGaffer Darren Young is hoping for a cup double to kick off the new season. After last week’s Petrofac Training Cup success at Airdrie, the Rovers are at home tomorrow to Livingston in the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup. The new Cliftonhill boss is looking forward to welcoming the championship side to Cliftonhill for his first competitive home match. “We know Livingston are a good side, John McGlynn has got them playing some nice football. It’ll be a good test for us, but we have every confidence in the players that they’ll go out there and do themselves and the club justice.” And finally, the gaffer has a message for the fans. He said: “The support we had at Airdrie last week was fantastic and they really got behind the boys. We’re hoping they’ll all turn out in their numbers again today for Livingston – you can never underestimate the value of a good home support.” albionroversfc.com/?p=5368

You've got to assume that the Rovers will be there for the taking. Still not impressed with McGlynn!

Talbot suspended again after getting a red card vs Motherwell so assume Rutherford will fill in again. Thought he played well last week so no issues with that.
Interesting to see if McGlynn sticks with Glen and Ogleby upfront or if he'll swap them for the two that finished last week - White & Hippolyte.
Looking forward to the game!

I had him down as first goal scorer as well. He owes me 17 quid. I notice he didn't have the bottle to step up during the shoot-out. What's that all about? Get back on it son!

He got substituted straight after the penalty miss. Don't think that the penalty miss was the reason for the substitution though.

Albion 0-0 LivingstonLivingston win 4-3 on penalties Livingston beat Albion Rovers in a penalty shoot-out to reach the second round of the Scottish League Cup. After a scoreless 90 minutes forced extra-time, Livi's Daniel Mullen missed a 107th-minute penalty following John Gemmell's handball. In the shoot-out, David Robertson's spot-kick put the visitors 4-3 up after nine penalties. And Mark McGuigan's effort was saved by goalkeeper Darren Jamieson to settle the tie. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28604295

Albion 0-0 Livingston: Livi leave it late and win on penaltiesDavid Robertson scored the winning penalty as Livingston made it through to the second round of the Scottish Communities Cup with a 4-3 shootout win at Albion. The game ended goalless after 120 minutes, with Livi's Daniel Mullen missing a penalty in extra-time, but the visitors came out on top in the end as Darren Jamieson kept out Mark McGuigan's spot-kick. sport.stv.tv/football/284896-albion-0-0-livingston-livi-leave-it-late-and-win-on-penalties/?

What a horrible game of football that was to witness. Didn't deserve to through atall. Albion Rovers were by far the best side.
DJ was about the only bright spot in a disgusting team performance. A couple of great saves during play on top of the two penalty saves were about the only thing positive from the match. He gets paid to do a job and on this occasion pulled through. Hopefully good signs for the season as he will need to be at his best consistently this year.
Danny Mullen. Why wasn't he subbed at half time? That was horrible to witness. What exactly does he bring to the table? Shocking performance, and stepping up to take the most important penalty? He played shocking, his body language was terrible and then given the chance to do that? Hopefully dropped for next week.
Why do we insist throwing the ball up to White (who looks very poor also) to play as 'target man'?! Everything bounces off him, and loses it with his disgusting first touch. Hopefully, not in the starting line up next week, seems to be way beyond his level, even at Albion.
Why does Burton play so deep? Played as a third centre back at times, sometimes further back. Don't see the need in dropping so far back to play World Cup balls all the time. Almost like two men down with O'Brien playing so deep and Mullen running about aimlessly.
Gallacher & Rutherford look decent, but Sives? I can't believe I'll say this but can't wait to see Mensing back to rid Sives out the team.
What's it with his inability to take a throw in? Throw it to feet. It's not hard. 'Give and get' is the only thing we can do when it works. Same thing over again. Has no one got a hint of a creative side atall?
Atleast we won to hopefully get a money spinner but we need to up our game and change a few of the squad up....early signs of a few diddys in the team already. Not that McGlynn helps right enough. Maybe we will get a decebt manager soon enough.

Poor game in poor conditions in which the best team lost. However, I've been to plenty of games in the recent past where we've been the better team but lost the game so good to see us getting a rub of the green for once.
We were never really in the game and a long-range effort from Gary Glen aside, I don't remember us testing their 'keeper much. I thought Gallagher and Sives were easily our best outfield players with DJ deservedly taking the plaudits for two big saves in normal time before doing the business in the shoot-out too. I think I counted 4 last ditch blocks from Sives which, had he not got across to make the challenge, Albion would have had free shots at goal from inside the box.
I'd like to see Hippolyte start next week against Hibs and was surprised we waited so long to bring him on. He looked sharp and keen to take players on and could have maybe done with more time. I'd go with him and White next week.
Don't think the penalty miss had anything to do with Mullen being replaced. Hippolyte was already stripped and waiting at the side of the park before the penalty was taken.
Definitely one of those games that we need to put behind us, be happy to have progressed and look to improve things for next week.

A really strange game!
I honestly thought (hoped) we would be too good for them. That we weren't is a bit of a worry.
Aye, they had a couple of chances, but we're through and that's all that matters.

Not that McGlynn helps right enough. Maybe we will get a decebt manager soon enough. I can hardly see us sacking McGlynn considering we've barely two pound coins to rub together. How much would that cost us?

We're surely not talking about sacking the manager after getting through the first round of both cups for the first time in feck knows how long?!

We're surely not talking about sacking the manager after getting through the first round of both cups for the first time in feck knows how long?! Not just the Albion Rovers game. Never rated him as a manager. Woeful at both Hearts and Raith, and it seems he's brought that here too. I think we got the rub of the green on both games, in extra time and on Penalties. Glad they both went for us, and hopefully it continues but if players don't up their game then it will be a long hard season ahead. Still hoping for a change in managed though haha!

Livingston goalkeeper is shoot-out hero in tricky cup tieDarren Jamieson is at it again. The Livingston keeper saved five penalties last season and it was his spot-kick antics that took the Lions into the second round of the League Cup at the expense of plucky Albion Rovers. John McGlynn’s men needed a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win to edge past League 2 side Rovers after a 0-0 draw at a sodden Cliftonhill, with Jamieson saving two efforts from the Coatbridge side. It made up for a shocking spot-kick miss from Danny Mullen in extra-time and got a victory for Livi which at times looked unlikely against their lower-league foes. “Coming to these kind of places, you want to come here to play well, but when you don’t play well, the main thing is to get ourselves in the hat for the next round,” said Jamieson, acknowledging that the visitors were well below their best. “We’ve got through this one and we beat Queens last week [in the Petrofac Training Cup], so both ties have been successful. That’s the main thing.” www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/football/livingston/livingston-goalkeeper-is-shoot-out-hero-in-tricky-cup-tie-1-3498146
