Prior to losing Donaldson, we looked to be shaping up in a 4-4-2 most of the time - back four of Talbot, Mensing, Donaldson and Fordyce with 4 in midfield and 2 upfront.
Since Coll left, it looks like we've tried to reshuffle the whole shape of the team to accomodate and we now appear to be playing a 3-6-1/5-4-1. 3 centre halfs (Mensing, Mevlja, Dycey) with two wing backs (Talbot and Mampuya), 4 in midfield (Keaghan, Kyle, O'Brien and Scott) with McNulty upfront.
Despite packing the midfield, I still feel we're firing aimless punts up to McNulty and without Barrowman up there, we're going to struggle for him to do much unless he has better support.
It looks like we've sometimes tried to use Habai as that link for McNulty but he doesn't really seem sure of where he should be (probably given he used to playing at the back/more defensively).
I actually quite like the idea of wing backs with a back 3 but we need two upfront for that to work. I get that soemtimes we want to pack the midfield to stop the other team playing (Falkirk away for example) and when it works, great but for me we never looked like threatening Dundee at all on Saturday because anytime we tried to clear our lines, McNulty was left isloated against 3 and soemtimes 4 Dundee defenders. Had he had more support or a second striker playing with him, we might have had a bit more luck.
I fully expect we'll line up much the same this weekend away to Raith and try to stop them playing and nick a goal on the counter but we really need to be offering Sparky more help going forward. Eventually he'll grow more and more frustrated at his lack of involvement that when the ball does get up to him, he'll be overly keen to try and make something happen.
Time will tell but I find it strange that we've reshaped our whole structure to accomodate the loss of Donaldson when we have the players to keep playing the 4-4-2 and be a bit more attack minded.
