In inheriting a struggling and out of sorts squad at Victoria Park, Hughes has one win in seven games to his name - albeit at title-chasers Sheffield United.
But he insists it's a long-term project to lift Pools' desperate fortunes around and admitted: "I had real strong conversations with Russ (Green, chief executive) and the chairman when I came in about what had to be done.

Sounds oddly similar to what he said during his tenure with us.
I can't say I'm stunned.

Yep, you'd have to suspect that Hughes would drop Hartlepool like the proverbial hot tattie if an offer he perceives to be better comes along, no matter the positive noises he's currently making about the long term plans he has for them.

Looking at the league tables i think any offer from anywhere would have to be seen as better than hartlepool just now.

Long-haul means about 9 months doesn't it?

A lot of effort from Hughes travelling up and down for not much return.
Been at a few Livi games since he left us!!

We were left in the lurch and now he's been shown the door down there. Disappointing all round.

Very strange given that they were all but away when Hughes went down there and he got them pushing close to escaping but it was just a step too far.
I'd always assumed the idea of bringing him in when they did was to get plans in place for next season to try and bounce straight back up.

What an awful career choice he made. Would still be in a job here if he hadn't been lured by the cash.
No doubt he would have done a decent job in League 2. Odd choice to bring him in to only clinch survival. How short sighted.

I'd always assumed the idea of bringing him in when they did was to get plans in place for next season to try and bounce straight back up. If I remember correctly he got them out of the bottom four but promptly took them back into it again; so it could be argued that the buck stops with him as it was down to results AFTER he had them out of the bottom 4 that they ended up back in it....it was in their own hands & they blew it.

I don't think they ever got out of the relegation zone. They were 20 games without a win when he took over and he managed to get them playing a bit better - to the extent he won a manager of the month award but seemed to be too big a task to claw back the deficit they'd already created.
I quite liked him and can't help but think we'd have been in a much better position if he'd stayed here. Such is football though!

I still get depressed when I think about the 4-1 drubbing at East End Park under Hughes.
