In Alasdair MacNeill's Talking Point he says "No country has ever won the World Cup during the papacy of a Pope from the same country" Italy won the World Cup in 1934 and 1938. A quick Wikipedia search shows that every Pope from 1523 to 1978 was born in what is now called Italy. It is true that the Pope of the time was born in an area which was, at the time of his birth, part of the Austrian Empire, but his birthplace had become part of Italy by the time of his papacy.

So are you saying that if during my lifetime Iceland invade the UK and acquire Scotland that I would no longer be Scottish, I would be Icelandic?
In fact your logic dictates that no one can claim to be English, Welsh, Northern Irish or Scottish...we are all British.

So are you saying that if during my lifetime Iceland invade the UK and acquire Scotland that I would no longer be Scottish, I would be Icelandic? In fact your logic dictates that no one can claim to be English, Welsh, Northern Irish or Scottish...we are all British. Karol Wojtyla ( the Polish man who was elevated to the papacy in 1978 taking the papal name John Paul II) is widely said to have been the first non-Italian to be the Pope since the Dutchman Adrian VI died in 1523, even though there was no unified country called "Italy" for much of the intervening period. The area of Pius XI's birth was informally known as "Austrian Italy" when it was ruled by Austria, according to the Wikipedia article I consulted. Do you say that no-one born earlier than March 1971 can be called Bangladeshi, but should instead be called Indian (if born before mid-August 1947) or Pakistani (if born after then but before March 1971)? The area that is now Bangladesh was part of India until Britain relinquished control of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Pakistan was then created as a separate country and awarded two pieces of land on either side of what remained called India. In 1970 East Pakistan voted overwhelmingly for a political party that wanted to devolve many more powers to each part of the country. This party was prevented from taking office by the military junta based in West Pakistan, therefore the man who was the rightful Prime Minister of all Pakistan declared East Pakistan independent and changed its name to Bangladesh.

Not interested in the papacy. Nor am I an authority on how you determine anyone's nationality. Are pre Sri Lanka people Ceylonese or Sri Lankan? I'd say they are Ceylonese.
