www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/35031970I like the idea of draws in the group going to a penalty shoot-out for an additional bonus point. Certainly adds a bit of excitement for the punter after a bore draw and makes for more potential outcomes as the group nears conclusion. Also led to believe that the group stage will be regionalised. It appears that BT Sport have the rights for the cup now too so will be showing games on there. Probably a gap in the market in July for televised games so more exposure if anything. Interesting to see if the lower league teams will vote in favour of the winter break too - you'd have to imagine they will. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but I like the sound of the new proposals as a fan.

I like the idea of drawn games being decided & presumably the "extra point" means that winning a group game on pens is worth 2 points while the loser gets 1 point for the draw at 90 mins.
The problem is that it means even MORE games...IMO they should now streamline the leagues into 2 divisions of 16 & 1 of 10 (which is problematic but workable) or add 6 more to make 3 divisions of 16 (I prefer 3 x 16) playing each other twice a season for 30 league games; the teams in the group stages of the LC would have 8 group games; so they are all guaranteed 38 games a season & the qualifiers would then have the knock out stages & other cups.

I'd envisage a lot of teams would use the league cup games almost as pre-season. So instead of having meaningless games over that 2 week period, you'd have games with a competitive edge instead.

Good job it wasn't this season or we'd have been in big trouble with our thrown together at the last minute team due to the signing embargo. Should be better prepared pre season player wise next season.
It's a bit like the mini fife league comp they do in pre season, looks a good idea. Just need to try and get through it to be in the LC knock out stages and give us a cup interest later in the season. The Petrofac cup will be going on about the same time too though.

No reason why the Petrofac couldn't be delayed.... I quite liked the LC in this format years ago but the current format has been exciting so I don't see why they need to change it when the actual league is what needs to be revolutionised & I don't mean by changing the name & serving up the same tired & boring format that currently exists.
Treating it as "competitive pre-season" devalues it IMO...the fact it no longer carries a European place for the winners has already devalued it & to treat it as "competitive pre-season" would lower it again.

I think you just have to work your pre season games around it. Get a couple pre season games in before it starts and then right into this group LC. Some CL group stages are played before our league kicks off so you just have to deal with it. Obviously teams wont be quite into their stride but it's the same for everyone.
I understand what LL21 is saying though, I always thought the first LC game and the Petrofac cup first game was ideal for getting us ready for the league starting, gets you playing competitive matches after the pre season games, and then into the bread and butter league games. Not that it has done us much good, don't think we've had a good start to the league for quite some time, usually we lose our first league game.
