Can you imagine there ever being a time when a news piece like this one from 'Russia Today' would ever be aired on the BBC? No. Thought not.

The Great Yes, No, Don't Know Five Minute Theatre Show
Jim and Mick are pals across the divide. They attempt to debate the finer (and not so fine) points of Scotland's potential independence. Unfortunately the debate puts their friendship, and the sanity of a curmudgeonly barman, at risk.
Written By: Kevin P. Gilday Directed By: Cat Hepburn Starring: Neil Leiper, Anthony Kelly and Fergus Mitchell.

Appalling child poverty figures show why we need Scotland’s wealth in Scotland’s handsAn extra 30,000 Scottish children have been pushed into poverty over the past year, while as many as a million Scots live below the breadline when housing costs are taken into account, according to a new report from the Scottish Government. Last year, Scotland’s economy grew, unemployment fell, exports rose and investment soared. But stagnating wages, Westminster cuts to benefits and tax credits and the rising cost of living have left families across the country struggling. Indeed, today’s paper shows that in-work poverty is on the rise in Scotland. 60% of children living in poverty come from a household where at least one adult is in employment. And the most worrying thing is that 70% of welfare cuts are still to come, while the Westminster parties plan to make further cuts to Scotland’s budget, jeopardising services and the quality of life of people living here. www.yesscotland.net/news/appalling-child-poverty-figures-show-why-we-need-scotlands-wealth-scotlands-hands

I think that Salmond came off second best by repeatedly failing to give a credible response to a Plan B on currency.
Equally I felt he could have done more with his time that bringing out newspaper clippings mis-quoting or taking out of context things people have said - when he asked Darling if he thought an Independent Scotland would be more susceptible to a UFO attack his credibility looked somewhat suspect.
Whilst Darling did deflect and skip round some questions, I felt that he gave a better account of himself and his campaign that Salmond did

I think it was always the case that the unionists in the crowd would not accept the fact that a currency union is in the best interests of both an independent Scotland and England.
Is Darling unable to comprehend that before negotiations take place that it is folly (for either side) to show the other their hand?
There's every chance that is the case because remember that he was in charge of the UK purse strings when the UK banking system went tits up and we're now all suffering under an austerity programme designed to save the City of London and shaft everyone else.
He's got such a short memory that he probably doesn't remember ever being a socialist.
Anyway, whether we're using the pound (because it's ours to use) or we're using used gingy bottles it matters not that much to me.
I just want the people of Scotland to make the important decisions that affect Scotland.
No more Trident. No more illegal wars. Get rid of foodbanks. Jail bankers who gamble away other peoples money. Have a parliament that 100% represents the views of Scotland. To stand on our own two feet.
That's why I'm voting Yes.

Whilst Darling did deflect and skip round some questions, I felt that he gave a better account of himself and his campaign that Salmond did www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0042/00420804.pdfI refer you to the above document...this outlines plan a (formal currency union) & lays out plans b, c ,d & e. Salmond DID answer the question indirectly by referring to this document; a document that was given to Edinburgh & Westminster with an urging to open discussions on it & allow the people of Scotland to make an informed choice. As of Feb or March this year, Westminster had not responded. So I ask who is keeping us in the dark over the options? Clearly the "No campaign". Salmond used the flippant throwaway lines on driving on the right & alien attacks to introduce the real issue he was raising regarding Scotland's membership of the EU. He was pointing out that in fact the "No campaign" was guilty of treating Scotland's independence as a joke & of propagating misinformation on real issues; so how can they be trusted? Darling could not give 1 example of increased powers for the Scottish parliament if we remain part of the union. When asked if he thought that Scotland COULD be successfully independent the word "Yes" seemed to have disappeared from his vocabulary; admittedly he just about agreed that it was possible but he was at pains to avoid saying yes. What is sticking in my craw this morning is the inability of the so-called analysts to actually see & hear what I saw & heard; so much so that they appear to be apologists for the No campaign.

Not sure how to quote something that contains a quote, but this should be a quote of part of Auldnick's post...
"I refer you to the above document...this outlines plan a (formal currency union) & lays out plans b, c ,d & e.
Salmond DID answer the question indirectly by referring to this document; a document that was given to Edinburgh & Westminster with an urging to open discussions on it & allow the people of Scotland to make an informed choice. As of Feb or March this year, Westminster had not responded."
If this is a fact, and I don't see any reason to believe it isn't, then why didn't Salmond just come out with it?
Stating in that debate that there were several other options laid out in X document which was issued on X date and then walking through those options would have driven a nail into the "no plan B" coffin. If that had been transparently explained last night it would have undoubtedly have put Darling on the back foot and "won" the debate for Yes, while probably also swinging many undecided people towards Yes.
Not everyone will choose to (or don't know how to) get the information and understand the position as Auldnick has. They are the people that need to be targeted by Yes or No by providing clear information. (With that in mind I don't know why the document was passed to Edinburgh and Westminster with an urge to open discussions and allow the people of Scotland to make an informed choice. Of course Westminster aren't going to make it visible as it's against their interests. The Yes campaign / Edinburgh should have made sure that this was dispensed and became common knowledge throughout the country. But that's another discussion!)
But instead Salmond has given a vague answer "they're included in x document". Why not be open and honest to the people and tell them there are other options? Many folk aren't going to bother to read that document so on the matter of currency, all they've seen is Salmond not giving a clear answer on national television. Given the lack of transparency, one can only assume things maybe aren't as black and white as X document suggests..?
For the record I'm on the Yes side of the fence but I can totally see why No people are being cautious, especially based on Salmond's responses to the currency question last night.

I agree that Salmond SHOULD have highlighted this, it was one of the things I was disappointed about but only after I learned of its existence. The document had to go to both Edinburgh & Westminster as it will no doubt form part of the negotiations should Scotland vote for independence. There is a statement from the Fiscal Committee that produced the document I linked earlier which indicates their disappointment with Westminster. I found it on my iPod but can't relocate it on my computer (different search engines) it is however on the same website but has a different numbered pdf.
I have heard (though I did not notice it last night) that Salmond actually said "Plan B is an informal currency union" during the debate & I'm sure there was some discussion on that possibility, Darling describing it as a ridiculous option. I would have to read a transcript of the event or watch it again to find out if Salmond DID say that or not; but if he did then it has been missed by 99.9% of those watching.
Assuming that he didn't say this; why didn't he outline the other options? Because the preferred option is formal currency union & he pointed out that even Darling has said this, the caveat that Darling added (that it only works in the current UK set up) is immaterial as this is untestable unless independence is delivered. Also, because prominent people in the cabinet (he cited 1 or 2 of them last night) have confirmed that formal currency union IS the way forward if Scotland becomes independent & WILL happen; the whole point of Salmond's "non-disclosure of alternatives" was to point out that formal currency union is the best option & is considered as such on BOTH SIDES...which Darling was trying to deny...thus proving Salmond's thinly veiled claim that the No campaign is called Project Fear as it is geared towards scaremongering & sowing the seeds of doubt.
Salmond caught Darling in a number of contradictions but this has been entirely missed by the commentators.

When you tell an English person that his country has not been "independent" since 1707 in 2014. ]That in 1603 a Scottish King James VI enlarged his kingdom to include England. That in 1606 invented the first Union Flag and used the term "Great Britain" as a geo political term to describe his Kingdom. So when I hear idle chatter about Scotland leaving England or not wanting to be part of England anymore. I laugh as its the other way round. We have created the illusion that we are the subservient weaker part of the Union. England Like Scotland is only Independent on the football pitch, cricket pitch and Rugby pitch. I used to say "what's on your passport" ? That's the country you live in. I voted "Yes"
