So when Ronaldo moved from Man Utd to Real Madrid for £80m in 2009, I don't think anyone ever thought that record would be broken - unless someone tried to steal Messi from Barca.
Now it looks increasingly likely that Gareth Bale is going to head to Madrid too - but for a reported £93m. Madness!
Spurs have already spent around £60m on new players with another two still being heavily reported. In my eyes, if Spurs get the two guys they're after - Willian and Lamela, they'll be a stronger side than they were last season and that'll be pretty much without spending a penny due to the £93m coming their way.
They bought Bale for £10m back in 2007 and at one point it looked like he might be punted out after failing to impress in the early stages - mental to think he'll now be the most expensive player in footballing history.
I think £80m was too much for Ronaldo let along £93m for Bale. When Ronaldo moved though, he was 24 year old and had won 3 Premier Leagues, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 1 Club World Cup, got to the semi final of the World Cup and had been runner-up of the Euros, pretty much having proved he could do it on the big stage. Bale is 24 now and doesn't have much in the way of success to show so far. He's undoubtedly an excellent player but not sure he's really worth more than Ronaldo.
Frightening amounts of money in both cases!

How much did he go for in the end?

£85M I think that Spurs have done the better business, changing a single asset into a range of players. It takes just one Vinnie Jones football or Bolt driving moment for that £85M to be worthless.
