The A to Z of Independence - Sorting myth from factEver since the independence referendum was announced, Scotland has witnessed a gradual deterioration in the standard of debate, with scaremongering in place of reason and myth masquerading as truth. This has left many Scots bewildered, and sadly, hopelessly misinformed. As an antidote to the very many claims put forward by those who would oppose Scotland and her people taking back all of the powers currently reserved to Westminster, Paul T Kavanagh has compiled a humorous but informative A to Z that debunks many of the wild assertions that have made their way into the 'Great Debate'. The list below is updated periodically and checked for accuracy. We hope it both educates and entertains. Non-commercial use of this article is positively encouraged. Feel free to copy, quote or share. The A-Z of independence

So will an average bloke like myself be any better off within an independant scotland or will it just be the usual 'vote for us/this' and itll just be more of the same with a different face leading the way?

You'll be substantially better off, because at present Scotland subsidises the UK by paying more than its due share into Westminster's coffers. And that doesn't even include the oil money.

Salmond accused of “stamping on the face of history”
September 18 date “already has stuff”, say Unionists.
Alex Salmond, who has been forced into naming the date of the referendum on separation, has been criticised for naming the wrong date.
The First Minister this week revealed that residents of Scotlandshire will get to vote to protect the UK on September 18th, 2014.
However opponents of separation accused Salmond of trying to gerrymander the date, in the process taking the spotlight from events that are also related to the 18th.
“Stuff already happens on that day,” whined Labour MSP Patricia Ferguson. “The media are in cahoots with the nationalists and will forever attach the separation vote with September 18th. Our job will be to distract you from that nonsense, and talk about other things.

Don't let the truth get in the way of a good post. As a long time SNP supporter I rather we told the full truth and put the blame squarely where it lies, but every time I have mentioned the issue our illustrious leaders have stiff led the debate. The Elephant in the room is Europe. And if we believe Cyprus was a one off we have obviously not read three years of IMF reporting.

You keep posting propaganda but answers. In the SNP rush to leave the UK to join Eeu. they seem to be making no statement or comment on what happened in Cyprus. For Europe to fuction it needs to fedrralise, single policies on tax spend defence etc. With this reality why is Salmond ignoring it?

How is any of this propaganda? And the last time I looked Scotland was already a part of the EU.
Scotland can make it's own mind up on all the important issues that arise. Currently the important issues (weapons of mass destruction, illegal wars, Bedroom Tax, welfare etc etc) are discussed behind closed doors in London with diktats handed down to the regions.
That's no way for a civilised country to conduct it's affairs!
Independence isn't about the SNP or any of the other current London led party's. It's about a country throwing off the shackles of this one sided broken sham of a union and standing on its own two feet.
It's time Scotland raised it's own money and paid it's own bills.
That's only ever going to happen with a Yes vote.

Pedro. Scotland is not a member of the EU. The UK IS and as been stipulated many times by many different EU officals Scotland will have to apply. Second it is a cherrypicking when as a demoracy we blame the collective for joint decisions. Scotland has been as represented if not more so than England. IN fact Scotland provided the TWO pms before this Tory. I will agree with you about deciding our own fate. It is for this reason we should stay out off and well clear of Europe. The eventual destination of Europe is Fedralisation, which is the ultimate loss of our nation state because we will just be a region of Europe, to which end where is the benefit of changing. As presented The SNP independence is 12 12 18 of politics. Let us be brave enough and try for real independence like Switzerland.

I want independence. What is being offered is transfer of alliegence. If we are so miffed with surfdom why just change our laird, change the condition not who we blame. Europe has proven they cannot be trusted and works for the benefit of one individual member state. They for example promised to protect savings but under the direction of Germany forced Cyprus to raid the bank accounts of citizens. Meanwhile the EU politicans enjoy football superstar wages. Is this the actual goal of of those leaders who are rushing to embed themsleves there?

This month in the stars: There are just too many unanswered questions. Cosmic uncertainty means Scots need Westminster’s guidance more than ever.ARIES. Due to recent changes to the welfare system you might lose some of the income you need to sustain yourself this month. But look on the bright side; we’ve still got 300 years of shared history with the rest of the UK! So when you’re feeling cold or hungry, just remember our glory days of telling the rest of the world what to do. It really is lovely if you think about it. TAURUS. You might not find a job this month, but it’s okay! Just keep your fingers crossed and maybe one day we’ll get a good government in Westminster. My personal favourites were Thatcher, Blair and Cameron. It’s exciting to think who we might get next. Maybe Ed or Boris! GEMINI. Make dependency stylish this month by treating yourself to a Better Together cagoule, poncho or pin badge. Show off your ‘UK OK’ as you strut down the street past all the boarded up shops. It’s okay, we’re in the UK! CANCER. You’ve been leaning towards separatism this month and you need to get your life back on track. Stop worrying about the government and treat yourself to a DVD of the Diamond Jubilee’s best bits. I liked the bit when the Queen had to listen to JLS. LEO. You like the good things in life and know how to enjoy them. Why not attend a Better Together fundraiser this month in a Chelsea mansion house? It’s only £750 per head and you will be treated to several wonderful speeches by senior members of the Conservative party. Bottoms up! VIRGO. In 2014 your birthday will fall around the date of the referendum. You need to think carefully about whether or not British traditions like birthday celebrations will continue under independence. You still want cake, don’t you? Personally I like cake. LIBRA. This month you’re struggling with the cold weather in Scotland. Why not go to London? London has sunshine, jobs, money, culture, power, influence, art. In fact I don’t know why you haven’t moved already. What are you doing? SCORPIO. This month you really ought to dig out your old record collections and enjoy them whilst you still can. Great British music could be destroyed in a separate Scotland. I think I’d miss One Direction the most. SAGITTARIUS. You’ve been restless lately and should start thinking about taking up a new hobby. How about stamp collecting? How about playing Monopoly? I like playing Monopoly. I like being the banker and being in charge of everyone’s money. It reminds me how glad I am that Westminster is pulling the purse strings – these guys know what they’re doing. CAPRICORN. This month you’ve been wondering how you can maintain your privileged position in society. Well you’re in luck, we’re in the UK! Here, have a bonus. Have some diamonds and tiaras, or a duck house for your pond! You deserve it. AQUARIUS. You’ve been feeling a little insecure lately. But don’t worry; not far from your home is a depository of nuclear weapons, each one several times more destructive than the Hiroshima bomb. So just chill out, okay? PISCES. A neighbour or a friend will need your help this month and you should make yourself available. The woman in the house round the corner is being pushed towards a Yes vote because of the benefits cuts. You should remind her that people might not even live in houses in a separate Scotland and that she would have to learn how to speak Garlic. nationalcollective.com/2013/04/02/horoscopes-your-month-in-the-stars/

WALKING THE WALK: David Cameron with Commander John Livesey during a visit to the Vanguard Class Submarine HMS Victorious on patrol off the west coast this week Picture: Andy Buchanan/PA The lies of our own dear leader are easily explodedMr Cameron didn't say whether Kim could launch in 45 minutes, or whether there was a Downing Street dossier to prove it. A quick check of the prime ministerial "fact" established that the disco-dancing tyrant's biggest rocket, the Taepodong, has a maximum range of 6000 kilometres. London is 8657 kilometres from Pyongyang. The remote, notional threat is to Guam, not Govan. www.heraldscotland.com/comment/columnists/the-lies-of-our-own-dear-leader-are-easily-exploded.20716969
